On March 11, the 10th anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in East Japan, Armen Pambukhchyan, the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations and Jun Yamada, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Armenia, Colonel Armen Gasparyan, the Director of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the employees of Lori Regional Rescue Department, the representatives of regional and urban authorities and others paid tribute to the memory of the innocent victims near the monument-khachkar in Spitak Central Park.

Armen Pambukhchyan, the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, sent words of support to people of Japan, who survived the disaster, then referred to the armenian-japanese friendship and the joint programs implemented in the field of emergency situations.

“In 2013, on the initiative of Armen Yeritsyan, the Minister of Emergency Situations of RA, a khachkar was installed in the central park of Spitak by the staff of Spitak Fire and Rescue Sqaud of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in memory of the victims of the Japan earthquake. The armenian-japanese peoples are sharing the same fate: we lived through that tragedy. However, I must state that this is not the only link between our peoples, Armenia and Japan, despite the differences, have many similarities: the lack of rich natural resources, great intellectual potential, diligence, impressive historical past, unique national culture, which have become a great precondition to cooperate in different fields. In particular, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has been cooperating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency since 2007, jointly implementing numerous programs, from technical assistance to education, training courses and exchange of experience. We can say with confidence that all the programs have been effective", noted Armen Pambukhchyan.

In his speech, Jun Yamada, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to RA expressed his gratitude to the Government of RA and armenian people that showed invaluable support during the earthquake in Japan and emphasized that people of Japan feel the friendly attitude of Armenia, highly appreciate the installation of the khachkar in Spitak town.

The participants laid wreaths and flowers at the monument-khachkar.
