The Vice Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia receives the Head of Yerevan office of the World Bank

Today Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan, the Vice Prime Minister and the Minister of Territorial Administration of the Republic of Armenia, received Mr. Aristomene Varutakis, Head of Yerevan office of the World Bank.

The Vice Prime Minister discussed with Mr. Aristomene Varutakis and Ms. Naira Melkumyan, his Deputy, the possibilities of financing the measures for prevention of natural disasters in Armenia.

The Government has already undertaken some measures for prevention of natural disasters, particularly, 1 mlrd Armenian drams were allocated for construction of protective coastal layer and for cleaning of riverbed of Araks River.

The activities of the Rescue Service of the Republic of Armenia were strengthened and significant financial means were annually allocated for elimination of consequences of natural disasters. It is necessary not to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters, but to reduce the risk. So, the readiness of the World Bank to assist Armenia will be appreciated.

According to the investigations of the World Bank, Armenia is at the top in the list of high risk countries, and expenditures for elimination of consequences of natural disasters will comprise 80% of GDP.
In order to develop realistic project for elimination of consequences of natural disasters, it is necessary to discuss in advance the most important and high priority spheres with the relevant institutions to rely upon possibility to save 150 thousand USD which is proposed by the International Fund for reduction of natural disasters.

During the meeting the following health-related issues were discussed with the Head of Health Projects of the World Bank and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Armenia, such as optimization in health sector, particularly improvement of hospital conditions in Marzes.

The World Bank Credit Project on reconstruction of a hospital in each Marz was discussed in details.
